Black-crowned Night Herons are stocky birds compared to many of their long-limbed heron relatives. They’re most active at night or at dusk, when you may see their ghostly forms flapping out from daytime roosts to forage in wetlands. In the light of day adults are striking in gray-and-black plumage and long white head plumes. These social birds breed in colonies of stick nests usually built over water. They live in fresh, salt, and brackish wetlands and are the most widespread heron in the world.

Even though Motorola showcased the world’s first cell phone in 1973, it was still a prototype. It would take years of work for the Motorola Dynatac 8000x to become available to the general public. After 10 years and $100 million in development costs, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x was released to the market in 1983. The first commercial cell phone provided 30 minutes of talk time, could store 30 phone numbers, and cost $3,995.

Weather patterns produce distinctive odors that sensitive noses sniff out. Before the rain begins, one of the first odors you may notice as winds pick up and clouds roll in is a sweet, pungent zing in your nostrils. That's the sharp, fresh aroma of ozone. The scent of ozone heralds stormy weather because a thunderstorm's downdrafts carry O3 from higher altitudes to nose level.

A large format camera is a camera with a frame that measures 4x5 inches or more. Due to 4x5 being the minimum requirement, equipment may be referred to as a 4x5 camera. 8x10 is usually the largest and most detailed large format film camera that does not require further enhancement when developing the image. In filmmaking, large format usually refers to film stock that is 65mm and 70mm (or digital equivalents).

Hydrangeas will sometimes wilt during the afternoon in hot weather, even if they do not need watering. Then they will perk up when it cools off in the evening. It is important to water so that the soil stays evenly moist like a wrung out sponge, not sopping wet/saturated and not dried out. To know if you need to water, dig into the soil with your finger. If it is still damp, do not water yet. When you do wate,r water slowly and thoroughly soaks it soaks down deep to the roots. After watering, wait a few hours and then dig down to see how far the water went, sometimes it can be surprising.

From our research, writing things down using your own words and abbreviations help with encoding knowledge in your brain in real time. Plus, this approach encourages active learning and yields better notes. Longhand notetaking methods — whether using old-fashioned notebooks or digital tablets — appear to beat laptop notetaking techniques due to the tendency for laptops to cause distraction or encourage less-effective forms of notetaking.

Exposure to cold and wet weather for long periods of time can lead to inflammation in the respiratory tract. This inflammation makes dogs more prone to bacteria invasion of the airways—aka, pneumonia. This is a higher risk for young dogs, older dogs with other systemic diseases, and any immunocompromised dog. It’s important to dry off your dog with a towel as soon as you come in from rainy walks and give them a warm, dry area to stay in. You may also consider training your pooch to wear a raincoat to avoid exposure to wet weather.

The most ancient relics of a weighing scales have been discovered in the Indus River Valley, near present day Pakistan, dating back to around 2,000 B.C. As trade developed during the ancient times, merchants developed a need to assess the value of goods such as crops, clothing and gold, in order to barter for their goods. The early devices used a simple, yet effective, system which relied on balancing goods. They consisted of two plates attached to an overhead beam which was fixed on a central pole. Measurements were taken by placing the measured object on one plate and weight stones on the other, until an equilibrium was reached.
