A huge range of elements including Tolkien's Christianity, epic Old English works like Beowulf and ancient architecture and languages he knew about from his academic studies were influences on the world of Middle Earth and the mythology of The Lord of the Rings.
He also has said that his personal experiences growing up in a beautiful area of the English countryside which was subsequently urbanized, and his time fighting in the trenches in World War I, influenced the stories he told in the world of Middle Earth.
