The all-time most well-known joke in the American joke book, having existed in some form since at least 1847, when it first appeared in print in The Knickerbocker, a literary magazine in New York City. In its original form, it was meant as a sort of anti-humor - there is the expectation of an unexpected twist, or a clever riddle-like answer, which is then subverted by the matter-of-fact answer.
