While many dogs may enjoy playing in the water because of the wet and cool sensation they experience, mud has a unique texture that dogs may find satisfying to dig into and roll around in. Unlike water, mud can be soft, squishy, and cool all at the same time! Playing in mud is simply a natural behavior for dogs. Their ancient canine ancestors may have used the mud as a means of hunting and survival by concealing their scent and blending in their environment. In addition, some dog breeds were also bred for outdoor work which required them to get dirty and muddy!
